In 1915, the Endurance became trapped in pack ice in the Weddell Sea while en route to Antarctica and was eventually crushed after months of battling the elements. What followed became one of the most extraordinary survival stories in maritime history—Shackleton and his crew made their way back to civilization across ice and open sea without losing a single man. Thanks to smartminting® technology, the ship is brought to life in its final moments: the sailing vessel, trapped in the ice, with every detail of its rigging and hull modeled in striking relief rising from the coin.
