This adventure and test of courage is captured on the Loop the Loop coin, named after a dual-track steel roller coaster that operated on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, from 1901 to 1910. The track was the precursor to all modern looping roller coasters, all of which use elliptical shapes. It was considered revolutionary in its time because it reduced the whiplash effect.
Despite the safer shape, the Loop the Loop still frightened many, as the technology was still primitive. This was before under-track safety mechanisms had been invented to prevent the cars from flying off the rails. The cars had actual tires, and the only thing keeping them on the track was the shape of the elliptical track and the speed.
