The combined suspension and bascule bridge was built across the Thames between 1886 and 1894 to accommodate the growing traffic in east London without obstructing shipping to the docks. The two distinctive Victorian Gothic towers conceal a hydraulic lifting mechanism that raises the roadway to allow ships to pass.
