This edition is dedicated to General George Armstrong Custer and Lakota chief Sitting Bull – names inextricably linked to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn, one of the most famous conflicts between Native Americans and the U.S. Army.
Custer was seen as an ambitious military leader; Sitting Bull became a symbol of resistance, freedom, and the struggle to preserve his people's culture. The reverse shows the two adversaries back-to-back in impressive ultra-high relief, separated by an arrow symbolizing the tension between two worlds. The seven notches in the rim allude to the 7th Cavalry. The obverse features Charles Schreyvogel's "The Duel, Tomahawk and Sabre" with galloping horses and raised weapons.
