Mongolia - Magnificent Argali - Black Proof
Description
Following the Majestic Eagle and Mystic Wolf coins, we now present the Magnificent Argali! The argali (Mongolian for ram) is the largest species of wild sheep and roams the highlands of western East Asia, the Himalayas, Tibet, and the Altai Mountains. They can stand up to 135 cm tall and measure up to 200 cm in length. They are adapted to extreme cold, arid climates, and very high altitudes of up to 5,800 m. Adult argali consume 16–19 kg of food per day, primarily grass.
The argali's main predators are Himalayan wolves and leopards. They are long-legged runners that escape danger primarily through swift flight. The argali is considered near-threatened, due in part to livestock farming and hunting—the allure of taking a trophy specimen is strong among sport hunters. They are hunted for both their meat and their horns.
