Same world. Same sky. But what holds it up? Akupara – the world turtle in Hindu mythology – begins the series The World: how different cultures imagined the structure of the world, now cast in silver.

Same world. Same sky. But where does it end – and does something hold it up?

Different cultures imagined different answers. Myths gave the world a form and its invisible supports a living shape, transforming questions into stories that could be told and images that could be seen.

These questions inspired Akupara, the first silver collector coin in the series The World, which explores how different cultures imagined the structure of the world.

Related turtle myths take different forms in different cultures: in some North American Indigenous traditions, the land emerges on the back of a turtle, while in Chinese mythology, the legs of a giant turtle support the sky. This coin explores Akupara from Hindu tradition – the world turtle that carries the elephants upon which the inhabited world rests.

Mountains rise. Rivers flow. Forests turn to ice under the sun and the moon. All life above is dependent on the creatures below. Akupara embodies stability and endurance; the elephants represent strength, support, and the cardinal directions of the world.

The high relief reveals the composition layer by layer, while selective gilding adds warmth to the antique-finished silver. What looks like a landscape becomes an ancient explanation of the world.

Akupara invites us to encounter a world imagined through myth – familiar in its life, extraordinary in its foundation.

For one culture, the answer was Akupara. But how many different answers can carry The World?
