It is a pleasure to present this coin issue from 2023 celebrating the legend of King Arthur, one of the most famous and iconic figures in medieval British history.
According to tradition, Arthur's legend began in the early Middle Ages, when England was not yet a united country but was called the Kingdom of the Britons. This kingdom was often attacked by Saxon, Anglo-Saxon, and other Germanic tribes from Southern Scandinavia. King Arthur became legendary as a defender and protector of the Britons, thanks to his courage and skill in battle, keeping the country safe during his time.
The motif on the reverse of the coin depicts Arthur Pendragon in battle against his enemies, with the sword Excalibur in hand. Two warriors protect the king from behind, while another has already fallen.
The motif on the obverse of the coin features the twelve shields and names of twelve houses of Camelot, including Arthur Pendragon, King of Britain, and the eleven other knights who will be part of future issues in the series.
