Niue - Woman Warrior - Barbarian
Barbarians was the term for people or tribes who were perceived by others as primitive, wild, and warlike. Throughout history, many civilizations have called foreign cultures barbarians – sometimes due to linguistic and cultural differences, sometimes as an expression of prejudice or superiority.
The word barbarian has also come to describe a person perceived as aggressive, brutal, cruel, or ruthless, while barbaric is used to describe customs and actions considered crude or uncivilized.
In ancient Greece, the term was used for people who neither spoke Greek nor followed classical Greek culture. Even some Greek ethnic groups with unusual dialects could be described as barbarians. The Romans later adopted the concept and used it for non-Roman peoples such as Germans, Celts, Iberians, Helvetii, Thracians, Illyrians, and Sarmatians.
During the early modern period, the Byzantine Greeks used the word as a derogatory term for the Turks. The term also spread to Arabic in the form barbar and was used by the Arab conquerors for the indigenous people of North Africa, the Amazigh people, who later became known in Europe as Berbers.
Throughout history, the word barbarian has often been used to describe foreign peoples and rival civilizations that were perceived as different or incomprehensible. For example, Byzantium called the nomadic Turkic peoples north of the Black Sea, including the Pechenegs and Cumans, barbarians.
This impressive 2 oz silver coin immortalizes the mythical image of the indomitable barbarian – a symbol of strength, courage, and the raw power that has characterized countless cultures throughout history.
